Synopsis of Il Mare:
Eun Joo (Jun Ji-Hyun) has to leave the house she lives in, 'Il Mare', and move to an apartment closer to the city. However, before leaving the house, Eun Joo leaves a greeting card in the mailbox in front of the house. Eun Joo hopes that the next person who lives in the house will send the card back to her at her new address.
Sung Hyun (Lee Jung-Jae), who has just moved into Il Mare, finds Eun Joo's greeting card in his mailbox. However, Sung Hyun is surprised because the letter is from the future, specifically 2 years from then. Sung Hyun is also confused about how Eun Joo could know the name of the house she is staying in. After all, Il Mare is the name Sung Hyun gave the house.
Despite this, Sung Hyun still replies to the letter and puts his reply in the mailbox. Eun Joo in the future, who is visiting Il Mare at that time, finds the reply letter. She doesn't believe the reply she receives. Even her best friend doesn't believe the story Eun Joo tells. After several times exchanging letters, they finally realize that the mailbox is what connects them.
Their relationship becomes closer to each other. Sung Hyun starts to like Eun Joo and hopes to meet her. While Eun Joo is still haunted by feelings of love for her ex-boyfriend who left her.
Will their relationship end happily?
Review:
The film Il Mare has a pretty interesting story idea. The story idea about time travel will definitely have its own level of difficulty, because it needs to be adjusted to logic. This film is quite successful in presenting it.
Spoiler alert.
If you look at the storyline, Eun Joo and Sung Hyun are in the same timeline.
For example, when Sung Hyun stores wine in the bar in 1998, Eun Joo can enjoy
it in 2000. Another example, where Eun Joo cannot meet Sung Hyun in the future,
because Sung Hyun died in his time. However, when Eun Joo tries to change the
past, Sung Hyun creates a different branch of the timeline. So Eun Joo in the
future does not experience a change in the story, but Eun Joo in a different
timeline has a different story ending.
Although the story is presented very well and systematically. There are still a few plot holes that might have been missed. In the main timeline, Eun Joo lives in the house and takes care of Sung Hyun's dog because Sung Hyun suddenly dies. So the house will definitely be empty. While in the new timeline, how can Eun Joo still stay in Il Mare even though Sung Hyun doesn't die. Where is Sung Hyun in those 2 years?
The choice of music and sound effects is very suitable for each scene. The camerawork, editing, and color composition are also quite good. The acting of the actors is also quite good, only Jun Ji Hyun still looks stiff. However, that's understandable, considering this is her first film. The conflict of the story is not very deep, but it's not disappointing.
Overall, this film is a good film to watch, especially
for those who love fictional romantic stories.
Memorable Scene:
Eun Joo receives a recorder sent by Sung Hyun from the
past. While she is enjoying listening to the recording in the recorder and
reminiscing about the past, suddenly Sung Hyun's voice is heard from inside the
recorder. This scene shows their first direct interaction, although only from
the recorded sound. The connection of feelings between them is quite visible
from the scene.
Memorable Dialogue:
"Am I Still a Stranger to You?"
Ending:
Happy Ending
Recommendation:
Must Watch
