A documentary about the lives of illegal immigrants living in Tennessee who were also affected by an immigration raid that took place there.
Synopsis:
A raid occurred in Tennessee in 2018
that caused several illegal immigrants to be deported and arrested. The church
did not anticipate that such an event would happen in their area. Nevertheless,
they still try to provide protection and mental support to the families living
there. Many of these illegal immigrants have worked for a long time and built
families there.
They try to build closeness among
each other by worshiping together, eating together, and other activities that
make them feel less alone. They also hope the government can provide a good
solution to all the problems that occur so that it does not happen again.
Review:
“Illegal Immigration in particular is a huge problem that needs to be addressed”
The idea raised in this documentary
is actually very good and has potential. Unfortunately, the presentation is not
as imagined and lacks significant impact on the audience. By looking at the
title of this documentary ‘After The Raid,’ viewers will certainly have
expectations about the story inside. However, this part is only seen from the
interview of a woman whose husband was deported. There is no deeper exploration
of the topic, making the story seem directionless.
The story is more paired with
religion and church life, which actually feels less appropriate. It seems this
documentary only wants to attract sympathy for ‘illegal immigrants’ living in
America. Surely, those who make that decision already know the risks they will
face in the future, such as the threat of deportation and others.
Confusion is quite clear regarding
the main message the film wants to convey. Because we cannot see the event only
from one side with statements made as if touching the humanitarian side of
humans. Many things need to be revealed and discussed more deeply in this
documentary. For example, one dialogue says that there is a need for workers
from companies but it is not easy for immigrants to become American citizens.
It would be better if the
documentary first showed and provided information about the raid itself, who
the targets were. Then, the impact on those who still live there. As well as
the government regulations that could be used as education for other immigrants,
so that they can continue to work legally rather than illegally.
