Synopsis of Mama Retreat

Mercedes (Annie Gonzalez) is preparing to become a mother. Following her doctor’s advice to address her anxiety, she travels to a secluded location to attend a special retreat. The retreat is attended by several mothers-to-be who gather to share their fears and anxieties under the guidance of Julie.

At first, Mercedes feels like she does not belong there. She is uncomfortable sharing her personal struggles and doubts whether the retreat is the right place for her. However, Julie manages to gain her trust and encourages her to open up.

Things begin to feel strange during a communal meal where the participants are asked to eat live insects. Feeling disturbed by the experience, Mercedes becomes suspicious and immediately wants to leave.

However, Julie once again manages to convince Mercedes to stay until the evening session. As the night progresses, Mercedes finds herself trapped in a situation she never expected.

Will Mercedes be able to survive?

Review of Mama Retreat

Mama Retreat presents an interesting story concept with strong potential, especially if developed into a feature-length film. The premise creates opportunities to explore deeper character backgrounds, the psychological struggles of motherhood, and the mystery behind the retreat itself.

As a short film, however, it still leaves many elements unexplored. The story would benefit from additional details, such as stronger character development, a clearer foundation for the retreat’s background, and more elements that could enhance the mystery.

The beginning of the film builds curiosity and creates an interesting setup. Unfortunately, the conflict development feels less impactful, making the direction of the story quite predictable. The ending does provide an unexpected twist that adds intrigue, although it still leaves viewers wondering where the story could have gone if explored further.

The performances from the cast are good, although they do not leave a particularly strong impression. The cinematography, color composition, and music are presented well, while the location choice also adds an appealing visual atmosphere.

Overall, Mama Retreat is still an interesting short horror film to watch. Although it has some limitations, the concept itself shows potential for a much larger story.

Memorable Scene

The participants gather in a circle and perform an exercise together. During the session, they are encouraged to express themselves freely and scream to release their anxieties. Mercedes slowly becomes immersed in this feeling of freedom, releasing the emotional burdens she has been carrying.

This scene highlights Mercedes’ emotional vulnerability and the pressure that many women may experience while preparing for motherhood. Behind the excitement of becoming a mother, there can also be fears and anxieties that are often kept hidden.

Memorable Dialogue

"You wanna be mom material?"

Ending:

Cliffhanger Ending

Recommendation:

Worth to Watch
