Akane
has to end her relationship after finding out her boyfriend cheated on her with
his online gaming friend. She originally started playing the game just to match
her boyfriend’s interests, and now all her efforts feel meaningless. But
without realizing it, the game actually becomes the beginning of something new
for her.
Wanting
to catch her ex’s attention again, Akane attends an offline gathering held by
the game community. Instead, she meets Yamada, a professional player known for
being cold and hard to approach. Their unexpected interactions slowly bring
them closer together, especially after Akane joins the guild where Yamada is a
member.
Will
love truly grow between them?
Review:
Online
games have now become spaces where many interactions happen. Unexpected
meetings and growing feelings can change someone’s life, for better or worse. My
Love Story with Yamada-kun at Lv999, adapted from Mashiro’s webcomic Yamada-kun
to Lv999 no Koi wo Suru, tries to turn that idea into a light romantic
drama, although its potential is not fully explored and it leaves less of a
strong impression.
The
story begins with the introduction of Akane and the end of her relationship.
The audience is then introduced to the online game world she plays in, where
her first interaction with Yamada happens. These accidental encounters become
the bridge between the characters and slowly push the story forward.
The
conflicts appear in different forms, both internal and external. However, most
of them still revolve around Yamada, from guild members becoming jealous of his
closeness with Akane to the feelings growing between the two of them. The
presence of a third party also briefly adds potential for new tension.
Unfortunately,
these conflicts feel flat and are never really explored deeply. The transitions
from one conflict to another happen quite quickly, so the emotional impact
never fully settles.
The
story’s resolution works well enough, giving a happy ending to the characters,
although the direction is easy to predict. The after-credit scene becomes a
sweet addition that gives the story a warmer closing. Character development is
still visible, even if it is not fully maximized.
The
shallowness of the story is still understandable, considering it is not easy to
summarize a comic or anime into a limited film duration. With so many events
trying to fit into the movie, the main focus feels less maintained. Because of
that, choosing a clearer central focus to explore more deeply would have been
necessary.
Another
weakness appears in the chemistry between Yamada and Akane, which lacks
emotional depth. Their interactions are not very frequent, while the gaming
element that initially feels important ends up becoming little more than
background decoration. Even though, from the title itself, the film seems to
promise something bigger from that aspect.
On
the other hand, the film is still comfortable to watch. The actors’
performances feel natural, supported by attractive visuals. The make-up and
costumes are not excessive, yet they still maintain the comic-like atmosphere.
Camera movements, visual details, and color composition are also arranged quite
harmoniously.
In
the end, My Love Story with Yamada-kun at Lv999 still offers a light and
comfortable viewing experience, even if it does not fully explore the potential
of its story. Beneath its simplicity, there is actually room for deeper
emotions, especially in the relationships between the characters. The film may
not leave a strong impression, but it still manages to deliver enough warmth to
enjoy without many expectations.
Memorable Scene:
Even
though My Love Story with Yamada-kun at Lv999 is a light film, it still
has memorable scenes. Yamada tells Tsubuki about the trauma he experienced,
which made him choose to distance himself from women. A moment where the
kindness he once gave turned into a burden after being received with a different
meaning.
This
scene feels close to real life, where kindness is often misunderstood,
especially when feelings are involved. Giving attention does not always mean
having deeper feelings. But without clear boundaries, misunderstandings can
easily happen.
Memorable
Dialogue:
“Some people might take it seriously, so it’s better not to joke about romance.”
