Synopsis of Belenggu (Shackled)

A murder case involving a woman takes place in the small town where Elang (Abimana Aryasatya) lives. The killer remains unidentified and continues to roam freely, causing fear and suspicion among the residents. Everyone begins to accuse one another, and Elang is no exception.

Elang himself is haunted by strange dreams about the murderer. A mysterious figure wearing a rabbit costume repeatedly appears in his dreams, and he begins to suspect that this figure might be the killer they are searching for. His suspicion falls on Guntur (Verdi Solaiman), the husband of his apartment neighbor, Djenar (Laudya Cynthia Bella).

Elang notices that Djenar seems afraid whenever her husband comes home. He worries that Guntur might hurt her, just as he has seen in his dreams.

Another figure who constantly appears in Elang’s dreams is Jingga (Imelda Therinne). Although Elang has never met her before, Jingga appears as if she is trying to deliver a message. His curiosity grows stronger when Jingga suddenly appears at the bar where he works, allowing him to finally meet the woman who has been haunting his dreams.

However, Elang’s strange behavior begins to attract suspicion from those around him. Guntur reports him to the detective investigating the murder case, while the bar owner also becomes suspicious, especially after seeing Elang’s growing closeness with Jingga.

As Elang continues searching for the truth, he begins to lose his ability to distinguish between dreams and reality. The disturbing images of Djenar and Jingga that appear before him only make him question what is truly happening around him.

Will Elang succeed in uncovering the mystery surrounding him?

Review of Belenggu (Shackled)

Belenggu presents an intriguing psychological thriller that explores the relationship between dreams, imagination, and reality. The film invites viewers to become part of a complex puzzle, where every scene contains clues that slowly reveal the truth. With its many twists and hidden details, the audience needs to pay close attention to fully understand the story.

The slow pacing may feel challenging for some viewers, especially during the beginning of the film. However, the development of the story and conflicts is handled well. Although the ending feels slightly rushed, it still manages to deliver a satisfying conclusion.

The cinematography, camera movement, color composition, and music selection are all presented beautifully. The atmosphere created through these elements strengthens the psychological tension of the story. Abimana Aryasatya also delivers an impressive performance, especially through his expressions and emotional portrayal in every scene. Unfortunately, some supporting performances feel slightly stiff, making certain moments appear less natural. The use of formal dialogue, however, adds to the artistic atmosphere of the film.

Overall, Belenggu is an interesting psychological thriller, especially for viewers who enjoy films that explore the human mind and the uncertainty between reality and illusion. It is also refreshing to see an Indonesian film that dares to explore this kind of theme.
