Synopsis of 3 Hari untuk Selamanya
Yusuf
(Nicholas Saputra) is asked by his aunt to deliver a set of antique plates to
Yogyakarta for his cousin Ambar's older sister's wedding. Worried that the
plates might break during a flight, his aunt asks Yusuf to make the journey by
car.
On
the day they are supposed to leave, Ambar (Adinia Wirasti) is late after
spending the previous night drinking with her friends and Yusuf. As a result,
she misses the family's flight and decides to travel with Yusuf by road
instead.
What
should have been a one-day trip becomes a three-day journey when Ambar asks
Yusuf to make several stops along the way rather than going directly to
Yogyakarta.
Ambar
is not particularly close to her family. She has a free-spirited personality
and dislikes being forced to spend time with relatives, which is why she keeps
asking Yusuf to take detours and explore different places.
As
their journey continues, they begin to uncover things about each other that
they did not expect.
Ambar,
despite appearing carefree, carries her own worries about the future. Yusuf,
who initially appears devout and well-behaved, is not as innocent as he seems.
He gradually becomes immersed in the world Ambar introduces him to and begins
trying new and unconventional experiences.
Their
different perspectives lead to arguments as well as meaningful conversations.
Along the way, they influence each other's understanding of life, themselves,
and the future.
Will
Ambar and Yusuf successfully deliver the plates to Yogyakarta?
Review of 3 Hari untuk Selamanya
3
Hari untuk Selamanya explores the uncertainty of post-adolescence—the
period when people are no longer teenagers but may still be trying to
understand who they want to become.
The
film presents this theme through a journey, a storytelling approach that is not
entirely new, but one that Riri Riza uses effectively. The road trip gives the
characters space to move, talk, argue, and gradually reveal parts of themselves
that might otherwise remain hidden.
Ambar
and Yusuf have contrasting personalities. Ambar appears carefree and
independent, yet underneath that attitude she carries anxiety about her future.
Yusuf,
meanwhile, initially appears more religious, intelligent, and responsible. But
as the journey continues, we discover that he is not as restrained as he first
appears. He becomes increasingly influenced by Ambar and starts exploring
experiences that are outside his usual world.
Their
relationship becomes interesting because they gradually influence each other's
perspectives. Neither character simply stays the same throughout the journey.
The
premise is relatable, particularly for people around the same age as the
characters who are still trying to understand their identity and figure out
what they want from life.
However,
the execution feels somewhat less deep than it could have been.
Much
of the film shows the characters smoking, while the more meaningful
conversations tend to appear toward the final third of the story, particularly
during their arguments and the scenes at Sendang Sono. Earlier sections contain
more casual interactions without as much emotional or philosophical depth.
The
performances are very good, and the chemistry between the actors feels natural.
Nicholas Saputra is particularly interesting to watch because the role allows
him to move away from the types of characters audiences may associate with him
from films such as Ada Apa Dengan Cinta? and Gie.
Here,
he feels like Yusuf rather than a variation of those previous characters. The
supporting performances are also convincing.
The
cinematography and camera movement are handled well. Important visual details
are captured carefully, while the color composition suits the atmosphere of
each location. The song choices also support the mood of the journey.
There
is, however, one scene whose meaning is unclear.
At
one point, the screen suddenly turns black while viewers hear someone shouting.
The sound of something breaking follows, creating the impression that something
has happened to the set of plates Yusuf is carrying.
This
seems intended to make viewers wonder whether the plates have been broken.
However, the scene is introduced so abruptly that it becomes confusing rather
than intriguing.
The
film could have built up the context of this moment more clearly so that it
felt like a natural continuation of the story.
The
ending also feels somewhat less satisfying than the rest of the journey.
Despite
these weaknesses, 3 Hari untuk Selamanya remains an interesting film.
Its greatest strength is the way it uses a simple road trip to explore
uncertainty, identity, and the complicated transition into adulthood.
Memorable Scene
During
their journey, Ambar and Yusuf witness a traffic accident. The incident deeply
affects Ambar and makes her reflect on the meaning of life.
She
eventually calls her mother from a public phone, as though the unexpected event
has awakened a sense of longing and fear within her.
Sometimes,
an unexpected event can suddenly make us stop and reconsider the way we have
been living. We may become aware of how fragile life is and start questioning
whether we are truly satisfied with the direction we are taking.
Memorable Dialogue
"What's the point of having your own thoughts if you always believe in other people's thoughts?"
Ending
Cliffhanger
