Synopsis of My Best Friend's Wedding

Julianne (Julia Roberts) receives a message from her longtime best friend, Michael (Dermot Mulroney), after they have not spoken for some time. At first, Julianne assumes that Michael wants to marry her because of a promise they made when they were younger.

They had agreed that if neither of them had found a partner by the time they turned 30, they would marry each other. With Julianne's 30th birthday approaching, she thinks the promise is finally becoming reality.

But the news Michael shares is completely different.

He tells Julianne that he is getting married to Kimmy (Cameron Diaz) and asks her to attend the wedding. Julianne is shocked and struggles to accept the idea of Michael marrying someone else.

Michael and Julianne were once romantically involved, but the relationship did not work out, and they eventually became friends. His engagement forces Julianne to reconsider feelings she may have been ignoring.

She decides to visit Michael and does everything she can to win him back before the wedding, which is only a few days away.

Kimmy does not suspect Julianne's intentions. In fact, she asks Julianne to be her maid of honor.

Julianne begins trying different ways to sabotage the wedding. She embarrasses Kimmy at a karaoke bar, encourages her to offer Michael a job at her father's office, and comes up with other schemes to create problems between them.

But none of her plans works.

George (Rupert Everett), Julianne's close friend, comes to help. He suggests that Julianne should simply confess her feelings to Michael. Instead, Julianne tells Kimmy that George is her fiancé.

George is then forced to pretend to be Julianne's fiancé in front of Kimmy's entire family.

Surprisingly, the plan seems to have an effect. Michael becomes jealous, giving Julianne a small amount of hope that she may still have a chance.

Will Julianne succeed in winning Michael back?

Review of My Best Friend's Wedding

My Best Friend's Wedding is a light romantic comedy that is easy to enjoy. The film opens in a particularly entertaining way, with a song about marriage that immediately sets the mood and keeps the introduction from feeling slow.

The story is presented systematically, with an engaging plot and well-developed characters. The characters remain consistent throughout the film, while the conflict balances serious emotional issues with comedy and entertaining situations.

The resolution is also handled well and ultimately gives the story a satisfying conclusion.

Julianne's character can be frustrating, especially considering all the things she does to sabotage her best friend's wedding. Some viewers may also feel that she is unfair for suddenly wanting Michael after he has already found someone else.

But this situation also feels relatable to real life.

Sometimes, people do not fully recognize their own feelings until their closest friend is already in a relationship with someone else. Being placed in the so-called "friend zone" can make someone realize what that person actually means to them only after the possibility of losing them becomes real.

The performances are another strength. Both the main and supporting cast deliver natural performances, and the interactions between the characters feel convincing. The chemistry is especially enjoyable to watch, which helps the emotional and comedic moments work together.

The music is also an important part of the film. Several songs carry emotional meaning and fit the situations in which they are used. They help establish the atmosphere and strengthen the feelings of the characters.

The camera movement is also handled well. The visual details are neat, and the transitions between scenes flow smoothly.

There are still a few aspects that feel unrealistic. For example, Julianne can easily access Kimmy's father's laptop at his office. Michael's character also feels less strong or charismatic compared with George.

Kimmy's willingness to trust Julianne so quickly can also seem a little naive, considering they have only recently met.

Despite these weaknesses, the film remains highly entertaining. It is a great choice for viewers who enjoy romantic stories with a light comedic touch and can easily become one of those movies that never gets boring even after multiple rewatches.

Memorable Scene

Julianne tries to embarrass Kimmy by asking her to sing at a karaoke bar. At first, several people make fun of Kimmy because she sings off-key.

But Kimmy continues singing with confidence, eventually winning over the people around her.

The scene also shows how Michael continuously encourages Kimmy. His support gives her the confidence to keep going despite the negative reactions from everyone else.

This reminds us that the support of the people we love can matter more than the insults or judgment we receive from those around us.

Memorable Dialogue

"I tried to steal him. I lost."

Ending

Happy Ending

Recommendation
